コンテナに興味を持ったきっかけのひとつに、つぎのような話がある。曰く、建材のいくつか、たとえば窓枠などの大きさはじつはコンテナの大きさによって決まっている。そしてコンテナの大きさは、パナマ運河の大きさによって決まっている。そこを通れる大きさにコンテナ船は造られているからだ。と。つまり、ぼくらが働いているオフィスの窓の大きさは、パナマ運河によって決まっている。
